Museum Altes Dorf, Open-air architecture museum in Kolochava, Ukraine
Museum Altes Dorf is an open-air museum in Kolochava that gathers historic buildings and structures from different periods of Eastern European life. The site displays wooden houses, workshops, barns, and other structures that record rural living traditions.
The site was founded in 2007 to preserve buildings that would otherwise be lost, showcasing construction traditions from the 16th through 20th centuries. The collection brings together examples from various Ukrainian regions to document the diversity of these building cultures.
The museum displays how people from different Ukrainian regions constructed their homes and organized village life. The wooden buildings remain arranged by their original purposes, mirroring the layout of actual settlements.
The site is walkable and allows visitors to move slowly from building to building, observing details at their own pace. It is worthwhile to allocate sufficient time for a visit, as exploring the entire collection takes several hours.
Many of the buildings were transported from their original locations and carefully reassembled to maintain their original structure and function. This relocation makes it possible to display examples from distant regions under one site that would otherwise be difficult to access.
