Пам'ятний знак жертвам Чорнобильської катастрофи, Nuclear disaster memorial in Sviatoshynskyi district, Kyiv, Ukraine
The memorial is a sculptural installation featuring copper elements that represent atomic orbits and a formation of crane shapes positioned against a stone wall. The composition stands in a landscaped park setting at the intersection of Chornobylska Street and Beresteyskyi Avenue in the Sviatoshynskyi district.
The memorial was dedicated on April 26, 1994, exactly eight years after the nuclear disaster at the Chornobyl power plant. This anniversary date was chosen to honor those whose lives were forever changed by the 1986 accident and its long-term consequences.
Five granite panels along the memorial pathway display names of residents from the district whose lives were altered by the disaster's aftermath. Walking through this space, visitors encounter the human stories behind the event in a personal and direct way.
The site is freely accessible as a public park and can be visited at any time without restrictions. The outdoor location means that weather conditions may affect your visit, so consider checking conditions before you go and allowing time to read the names on the granite panels.
The copper elements are designed to show disrupted electron paths, symbolizing the chaotic impact of radiation on matter and life. This abstract representation combines with the crane figures to express both the violence of the event and the possibility of renewal.
