The Stepova mine is a coal extraction facility in the Lviv region that operates at depths reaching 550 meters below the surface. Its extensive tunnel network was designed and used for coal production operations.
A methane explosion on March 2, 2017, killed eight workers and injured 23 others at the facility. This incident resulted from safety failures in the operational protocols of that time.
The incident led to a national day of mourning in Ukraine, with flags lowered across government buildings to honor the deceased miners.
The mine remains under state control and is not open to the general public. The site stays under continuous monitoring due to ongoing safety concerns.
After the disaster, new safety measures and enhanced inspections were introduced across all coal mines nationwide. These reforms changed operational standards across the entire country's mining industry.
