Royal Air Force Station Akrotiri, Royal Air Force station in Akrotiri and Dhekelia, Cyprus.
Royal Air Force Station Akrotiri is an air base in the British Overseas Territory of Akrotiri and Dhekelia in Cyprus. The facility stretches across flat coastal land on the southern part of the island, with runways running parallel to the shoreline and buildings spread across several square kilometers.
The station opened in 1956 during the Suez Crisis when Britain needed a permanent base in the eastern Mediterranean. Since then it has served as a launch point for operations across the Middle East, with its role shifting alongside political developments in the region.
The base maintains international cooperation through joint training exercises with various NATO member states and regional military partnerships throughout the Mediterranean.
Access to the facility is strictly controlled and the public cannot normally enter the grounds. Anyone living nearby or with a connection to the British military should check entry requirements and identity documentation in advance.
The base is the only location in Europe where British forces maintain a full air station outside the United Kingdom itself. At the same time civilian aircraft use the facilities when the nearby international airport is closed or overcrowded, creating a rare dual function.
