River Derwent, Major river system in Yorkshire, England.

River Derwent is a major river system that flows about 115 kilometers from Fylingdales Moor through the North York Moors before meeting the River Ouse near Barmby. It runs through varied landscapes and forms an important waterway connecting the moors to lowland areas.

During the Roman period, engineers deliberately altered the river's direction to shorten the water route to their military base in York by 15 kilometers. This change shows how the Romans adapted the waterway to serve their needs.

The lower valley maintains traditional haymaking on floodplain meadows that support visiting birds and breeding species. This way of farming shapes how the landscape looks and shows how communities have worked with the river for generations.

The river serves as a major water supply source for Yorkshire communities and the wider region. Visitors can access the river valley through various walking routes and pathways along its course.

The river is one of only around 230 chalk river systems in the entire United Kingdom, making it ecologically special. These rare water conditions support diverse aquatic life that is difficult to find elsewhere.
