St James’ Park, Football stadium in Newcastle upon Tyne, England
St James' Park is a football venue made of concrete and steel in central Newcastle upon Tyne, England. The stands surround a grass pitch and hold a total of 52,305 seats, spread across several tiers.
The site served as grazing land near Town Moor from 1880 before becoming a playing ground. After merging with Newcastle East End, Newcastle United moved here permanently in 1892.
The name recalls grazing land that once stretched close to the royal hunting grounds at Town Moor, shaping this part of the city. Before kickoff, supporters gather in the surrounding streets and fill nearby pubs in the city centre, just a short walk away.
The ground sits on a slope in the city centre and is reachable on foot from downtown. The area becomes very busy before and after matches, so allow extra time to arrive.
The stands rise steeply and sit at different ground levels, giving the structure a distinct stepped profile. From several points inside, you can see over the rooftops toward the Tyne and the surrounding area.
