56 Leonard Street, High-tech skyscraper in Tribeca, Manhattan, United States
56 Leonard Street is a residential tower in the Tribeca neighborhood of Manhattan that rises 250 meters above street level. The facade is composed of stacked volumes with glass walls that reflect the sky during the day and interior lighting at night.
Construction began in 2007 under the direction of a Swiss architecture firm but was paused until 2012. Work resumed after securing new financing and was completed in 2016.
The glass cube design follows a system where each floor is slightly offset, creating a relief of projections and recesses. Local residents often call the tower "Jenga Tower" because of its similarity to the stacked wooden game.
The tower is a private residential building with no public areas and can only be viewed from the outside or surrounding streets. The nearest viewpoint is from Church Street or West Broadway, especially when looking north.
A metal sculpture by artist Anish Kapoor sits in the entrance area and distorts reflections of passersby and surrounding buildings. This work was installed in 2023 and is one of the few permanent art installations in a private residential tower in this part of the city.
