Badlands National Park, National Park in South Dakota, United States
The 244,000-acre park contains geological formations of layered rock, spires, and steep canyons spread across mixed-grass prairie ecosystems.
The area transformed from a national monument in 1939 to a national park in 1978, preserving ancient fossil beds from the Oligocene period.
The Lakota people named this region Mako Sica, and their descendants continue to manage the Stronghold Unit within the park boundaries.
Between April and October, visitors can explore 244 miles of trails, observe wildlife, and attend ranger programs at the Ben Reifel Visitor Center.
The park contains one of North America's largest deposits of ancient mammal fossils, including specimens of prehistoric horses and rhinoceroses.
