Marshall County, Administrative county in Northern Panhandle, West Virginia, US
Marshall County is an administrative division in the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia, stretching between the borders of Pennsylvania and Ohio. The landscape features rolling hills and the Ohio River, which forms a natural boundary on the eastern edge.
The county was established by the Virginia Assembly in 1835 and named after Chief Justice John Marshall of the United States Supreme Court. It became an important area for river commerce and transportation during the 1800s.
Grave Creek Mound in Moundsville is an ancient burial site built by the Adena people thousands of years ago. The mound draws visitors interested in learning about the early inhabitants who lived along the Ohio River valley.
Moundsville serves as the county seat and is the main hub for visiting the area and accessing services. The region is easily navigable by car, with local roads connecting small towns and points of interest throughout.
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad completed its line to the Ohio River in this area during 1852, marking a major milestone for regional development. This rail connection brought new economic opportunities and linked the region to distant markets.
