Brunswick, College town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States.
Brunswick is a town in Cumberland County at the northern tip of Casco Bay in Maine. The Androscoggin River flows through the area and empties into the ocean near the coast, while built-up sections spread between forested hills and wetlands.
The settlement began in 1628 under the name Pejepscot as a trading post along the river. The town council renamed it Brunswick in 1717 to honor the royal lineage of King George I and to strengthen colonial ties.
Classical music performances echo through the town each summer when orchestras and chamber groups gather for the Bowdoin International Music Festival. The college community shapes daily routines here, with coffee shops and bookstores opening early to accommodate students and faculty who walk the tree-lined streets between classes and rehearsals.
The former naval air station area now called Brunswick Landing contains offices, schools, and housing that visitors can walk through freely. Downtown sits compact along the eastern riverbank and can be explored easily on foot.
The Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum holds gear and records from polar expeditions in the early 20th century. The collection includes sleds, fur clothing, and hand-drawn maps that visitors can examine up close.
