United States Naval Academy, Naval academy in Annapolis, United States
The United States Naval Academy spreads across 338 acres where the Severn River meets Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. The campus includes dormitories, academic buildings, athletic facilities, and a domed chapel, all connected by wide walkways.
The institution opened in 1845 when Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft established the training site. After temporary relocation during the Civil War, it returned and later expanded its grounds and curriculum.
Visitors can watch ceremonies where midshipmen march in formation while the academy band performs. The community honors military traditions through public events that showcase the daily life of future officers.
Access for visitors requires security clearance at the gate, and identification is requested for all adults. Guided tours are available and provide insight into classrooms and grounds otherwise reserved for enrolled midshipmen.
The tomb of John Paul Jones rests beneath the chapel crypt, where visitors can pay respects to the founding hero of the American Navy. The building also houses a ship model museum featuring handcrafted replicas of historic vessels.
