United States Naval Academy Museum, Maritime museum at Naval Academy in Annapolis, United States.
The United States Naval Academy Museum is a maritime museum located on the grounds of the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. It occupies two floors in Preble Hall and displays ship models, navigational tools, uniforms, weapons, medals, and documents related to naval history from the 17th century onward.
The collection began in 1845 alongside the founding of the Naval School and grew steadily through donations, battlefield captures, and objects brought back from overseas expeditions. Preble Hall, the building that houses the museum today, was completed in 1939 and gave the collection a permanent home on campus.
The museum sits inside the Academy grounds, which gives it a different feel from a typical city museum, as visitors walk through an active military campus to reach it. Many objects on display belonged to officers who trained at the Academy itself, making the connection between the institution and its collection very direct.
To reach the museum, visitors must show a valid photo ID at Gate 1 of the Naval Academy before entering the grounds. Going in the morning tends to give more space to move around, as organized groups often arrive later in the day.
Some of the ship models in the collection were built specifically as teaching tools for Academy students and show the internal workings of the vessels in detail. This makes them different from typical display models, as parts of them can be opened to reveal the arrangement of decks, engines, and compartments inside.
