Barretts Tunnels, Railroad tunnels in St. Louis County, United States
The Barretts Tunnels consist of two parallel railroad passages through limestone ridges, constructed with manual labor and explosives in the 1850s.
Completed in 1853 under James Kirkwood's direction, these tunnels marked the first railroad tunnel construction project west of the Mississippi River.
The tunnels represent a milestone in American transportation development, demonstrating the expansion of railroad infrastructure during the nineteenth century westward movement.
The east tunnel stands empty while the west tunnel serves the National Museum of Transport as storage space for railroad equipment.
The construction period faced multiple challenges, including a cholera epidemic and worker riots, while Barrett's Station Road used materials from the tunnel excavation.
