Flatbush stretches between Prospect Park and Brooklyn College, connecting low brick houses with multistory apartment buildings along avenues shaded by plane trees. The main artery, Flatbush Avenue, runs diagonally through the area and offers shops, markets, and eateries on both sides of its wide roadway.
Dutch colonists founded the settlement in 1651 under the name Vlacke Bos, meaning flat woodland. In the 20th century, immigrants from the Caribbean moved here and transformed the area into a meeting point for different communities.
Caribbean influence shapes many blocks, where shops sell traditional spices and imported goods from Haiti and Trinidad. During summer months, street festivals bring steeldrums, reggae, and calypso music to the area and draw residents out from every corner.

The Kings Theatre from 1929 displays marble columns and ornate plasterwork in its interior, restored after a long closure. Today the building hosts concerts and theater performances, with chandeliers and wall paintings returned to their original glow.
