Benedum Center, Performing arts center in Cultural District, Pittsburgh, US
The Benedum Center is a theater building in the Cultural District of Pittsburgh, marked by a symmetrical facade with tall entry portals. Inside, multiple balconies line the side walls, while plaster and gold accents decorate the ceiling and railings.
The building opened its doors as a movie house in the late nineteen twenties and was later renamed following the death of its major donor. In the nineteen eighties, extensive interior work transformed it into the modern performance center.
The auditorium carries theatrical traditions and continues to host season performances by several ensembles presenting dance and opera productions in their founding home. Visitors notice the reverence with which locals treat the hall, considered the city's home for performing arts.
The boxes and tiers spread across several floors, with upper seats reached by staircases. The interior coat check accepts coats and bags for a fee, while nearby parking garages remain available through mobile applications.
A heavy chandelier from the construction era still hangs above the main seats and dims during performances. Its size surprises many first-time visitors entering the hall.
