ToonSeum, Art museum in Pittsburgh Cultural District, United States.
ToonSeum was an art museum in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, devoted to original comic art, animation art, and graphic illustration. It was located on Liberty Avenue in the city's Cultural District and showed works from across the history of visual storytelling.
ToonSeum opened in 2007 and moved to its Liberty Avenue location in 2009 with support from the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. After about a decade of activity, the physical space closed in 2018.
The museum showcased how artists used comic and graphic work to explore social movements and everyday themes. Visitors could see how popular culture and visual storytelling addressed important social issues of their time.
Because exhibitions changed on a regular basis, returning visitors would often find new works on display each time they came. The Liberty Avenue address put the museum within easy reach of public transit and other nearby venues in the Cultural District.
ToonSeum was one of very few places in the United States devoted entirely to comic art as a serious art form. It also ran workshops aimed at local artists, treating the medium with the same attention usually given to painting or sculpture.
