U.S. Steel Tower, Skyscraper in Downtown Pittsburgh, US
U.S. Steel Tower is a triangular skyscraper with 64 floors in Downtown Pittsburgh, reaching a height of 256 meters (840 feet). Each floor offers approximately 4,000 square meters (one acre) of space and displays exposed steel construction on the exterior.
The building opened in September 1971 as a corporate headquarters for the steel industry and reflected the peak of Pittsburgh's metal production. Planning began in the late 1960s when heavy industry still defined the region.
The tower's triangular form allows large open floor plans on each level, now mainly occupied by health facilities and law offices. The exposed steel framework made from weathering material changes color over time and shows the city's connection to metalworking.
Access is limited to the ground-floor lobby, as the building operates primarily as an office tower housing medical and legal facilities. The location on Grant Street makes orientation easy from most points downtown.
The exterior columns are filled with water, a fireproofing technique that allowed the structural steel to remain visible. This method had not been used at this height and scale before.
