Mellon Square is an urban park in downtown Pittsburgh with a geometric black, white, and green paved surface. It features cascading fountains and planted areas spread throughout the entire space.
The Mellon family foundations funded the construction of this park in the early 1950s as a modern civic project. The site was developed as an innovative public space to enhance the downtown area.
The square serves downtown workers and visitors as a meeting point where people spend their breaks and gather during the day. On nice days, you often see groups eating lunch outside or sitting on the steps to watch the surroundings.
The park sits above a parking garage and offers direct access to surrounding buildings and facilities. In rainy weather, there are covered areas and alcoves where you can take shelter.
This location was one of the first modernist garden plazas built above a parking structure in America. This unusual combination of public green space over a practical parking structure was an entirely new solution for city development at the time.
