The Blue Hills Reservation encompasses 7,000 acres of land with 125 miles of trails through woodlands, wetlands, and elevated terrains.
The Metropolitan Parks Commission established the Blue Hills Reservation in 1893 as one of Massachusetts' first public recreation areas.
The Massachusett indigenous people named themselves after these hills, which sailors identified by their characteristic blue color caused by riebeckite minerals.
The reservation provides year-round activities including hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, swimming at Houghton's Pond, and winter skiing opportunities.
The Blue Hill Meteorological Observatory, established in 1885, maintains the longest continuous weather records in North America from its location on Great Blue Hill.
