Tonawanda, town in Erie County, New York, United States
Tonawanda is a town in Erie County, New York, situated along Tonawanda Creek near where it meets the Niagara River. The town is made up mostly of residential streets with single-family homes, a few community parks, and older commercial and industrial buildings near the waterways.
The town was officially established in 1836, though the area had long been home to the Seneca people before European traders arrived. The opening of the Erie Canal a decade earlier had already brought new trade and settlers to the region, setting the stage for the town's growth.
The name Tonawanda comes from a Seneca word meaning "swift water" or "running water," referring to the creek that runs along the town. Along that same creek today, residents gather for outdoor events, fishing, and walking, keeping a quiet connection to the landscape that shaped the place.
Ellicott Creek Park is a good starting point for exploring the town outdoors, with walking paths along the water. Most points of interest are spread out, so having a car makes it easier to move between the residential neighborhoods, the waterfront, and the park areas.
A retired F9F-6P Cougar jet is on display in a local park, but this particular version was built specifically for photo reconnaissance missions rather than combat. That makes it a rarer type than the standard fighter variants and one of the few of its kind on public display in the region.
