Mayfield, County seat in Graves County, Kentucky
Mayfield is the county seat of Graves County in western Kentucky, spreading across roughly 18 square kilometers of agricultural countryside. The town sits at an elevation of about 145 meters (476 feet) and is surrounded by fields and farms that shape the rural character of the region.
The town emerged after the Jackson Purchase of 1818, when Isaac Shelby and Andrew Jackson acquired the territory from the Chickasaw. This land deal opened western Kentucky to new settlers and led to the founding of the present community.
The Graves County Performing Arts Center presents theatrical productions and musical performances throughout the year, enriching the local entertainment calendar. Visitors can attend live shows featuring local and touring groups that reflect the community's cultural life.
Several parks and recreation areas offer outdoor spaces for sports, picnics, and community gatherings within walking distance of downtown. Visitors find these green spaces easily accessible and can watch locals go about their daily routines there.
Maplewood Cemetery contains the Wooldridge Monuments, a collection of statues commissioned by Colonel Henry Wooldridge to memorialize his family members. This unusual group of monuments displays life-sized figures of people and animals that the Colonel ordered during his lifetime.
