Cape Lookout National Seashore

Cape Lookout National Seashore is a protected stretch of coastline in North Carolina made up of three barrier islands accessible mainly by ferry. These islands offer limited facilities for visitors seeking solitude and natural beach experiences.

The seashore was protected in 1966 to preserve this coastal landscape and its historic settlements. A distinctive lighthouse with a black-and-white diamond pattern marks the area and reflects its long preservation story.

Portsmouth Village Historic District displays preserved buildings from the era when sailors and fishermen lived and worked on these islands. The structures show how people built their daily lives in this harsh coastal environment.

To reach the islands, take a ferry from Harkers Island and arrange your trip in advance through reservation. Bring plenty of water, food, and supplies since on-site facilities are minimal and services are few.

Shackleford Banks is home to a herd of wild horses descended from Spanish mustangs that have adapted to coastal life over centuries. These animals are a rare sight and demonstrate how creatures adjust to isolated island environments.
