Vernon Township

Vernon Township is a municipality in Sussex County, New Jersey, spanning forested areas and lakes throughout the region. The area contains a mix of rural and suburban neighborhoods with diverse natural environments.

The township originated in 1793 when Hardyston Township was divided, then received official incorporation five years later. This early establishment shaped the development of the northwestern region.

Winter sports define much of daily life here, with Mountain Creek Ski Resort drawing visitors from nearby New York every season. Local traditions center around snow activities and the outdoor recreation culture they bring.

The area is best explored on foot or by car through local roads that connect neighborhoods and natural areas. Many trails and outdoor spaces are open to the public year-round for recreation.

The community runs a Bear Resistant Garbage Can Program designed to keep wildlife out of trash in neighborhoods. This effort shows how humans and forest animals must share the same landscape here.
