Case Western Reserve University is a private research institution in Cleveland, Ohio. The campus covers roughly 108 hectares (267 acres) and includes research centers, laboratories, libraries, and student housing in the northeastern part of the city.
The current institution formed in 1967 when Western Reserve University, founded in 1826, merged with Case Institute of Technology, established in 1881. Both organizations had operated in Cleveland since the 19th century and combined their resources into a single academic center.
The campus hosts public lectures, concerts, and exhibitions open to visitors who are not affiliated with the institution. Student organizations arrange cultural events that connect the academic community with the surrounding neighborhood.
Eight academic schools offer around 100 undergraduate programs and 160 graduate programs in fields such as engineering, medicine, and humanities. Parts of the campus are open to the public, while other buildings remain restricted to enrolled students.
The Michelson-Morley experiment of 1887, which measured the speed of light and disproved the existence of luminiferous ether, took place at this institution. This physics experiment is considered one of the foundations of modern relativity theory.
