Clearfield, County seat in central Pennsylvania, United States.
Clearfield is a borough in central Pennsylvania serving as the county seat of Clearfield County, situated along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River. Residential and commercial areas spread across the valley floor with the river flowing through the community.
The community received its name in 1805 from natural meadows created by Native Americans and bison in the dense forest. It later grew into an important administrative and commercial center for the surrounding coal-mining region.
The Joseph and Elizabeth Shaw Public Library established in 1940 functions as a central resource center for education and community programs.
The borough office is centrally located and handles local services and administrative matters. Parking is available near the downtown area, making it easy to visit local shops and public facilities.
The county courthouse is one of four historic buildings in the community listed on the National Historic Register. These structures, including a restored hotel and historic residences, represent different eras of local development and architectural style.
