Fort Washington, former fort in Manhattan
Fort Washington was a military fortification at the northern tip of Manhattan that was constructed during the American Revolutionary War. The installation was equipped with cannons positioned to defend the Hudson River, though the structure was destroyed in 1776 during combat operations.
The fort was built in 1776 to help American forces defend New York against British invasion during the opening stages of the war. After the Battle of New York that same year, British troops overran the position and subsequently dismantled the structure.
The original structure no longer exists, but a park now occupies the former site with historical information for visitors. The location offers views toward the Hudson River and nearby monuments help mark where this important defense position once stood during the war.
