Delmonico's is a steakhouse in the Financial District of Manhattan that has occupied a building on Beaver Street since the nineteenth century. Inside, marble columns, dark wood furniture, and molded ceilings evoke early banquet halls.
Giovanni Delmonico founded a confectionery here before the venue became a restaurant. Oscar Tucci acquired the operation during Prohibition and kept it alive through difficult decades.
The name refers to a place where guests still dine in tall rooms that recall the nineteenth century. Waiters wear bow ties and serve classics known well beyond the city.
The venue opens on weekdays for lunch and dinner and on Saturday evenings only. It helps to arrive early or reserve a table, especially in winter when the sun sets quickly.
The place introduced several dishes, including a particular cut of beef that still bears its name. Other recipes originated in the kitchen and were imitated elsewhere.
