USS Edson, Military destroyer museum at Saginaw River, United States
The USS Edson is a warship at the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum on the Saginaw River in Bay City, Michigan. The ship can be explored across several decks and displays weapon systems, radio rooms, and the bridge in their old condition.
The ship was built in 1958 in Maine and spent three decades in service, mostly in the western Pacific. After decommissioning in 1988, it was brought to Bay City in 1990.
On board, you can see how the crew once worked and slept, with narrow bunks, mess halls, and the command center preserved in their original condition. The name honors Major General Merritt A. Edson, a Marine Corps officer who fought during World War II.
Tours run from spring through fall, and sturdy footwear helps when climbing the steep ladders between decks. Visitors should be able to bend and pass through low doorways.
During the Vietnam War, enemy forces reported sinking the ship, though it continued to operate. This false report gave it the nickname that is still known today.
