St. James, Residential community in Suffolk County, New York.

St. James is a residential community on Long Island's North Shore that spreads across several square kilometers. The area features single-family homes, small commercial strips, and quiet streets that connect different sections together.

The region was founded as a settlement in the 1600s and grew into an important spot for travelers and trade by the 1700s. A general store operating since the 1800s reflects the long continuity of local commerce.

The name St. James comes from an early chapel that drew travelers and settlers to the area. Today the community is shaped by families who rely on local schools and value proximity to Stony Brook University.

The Long Island Rail Road station provides direct access to other parts of Long Island and to New York City. Most visitors find it easiest to explore by car since residential areas are spread throughout the community.

In the early 1900s, the area attracted famous entertainers like Lionel Barrymore, Ethel Barrymore, Buster Keaton, and Irving Berlin who used it as a private retreat. This connection to the entertainment world left a deep mark on local history.
