Hampden–Sydney College, Liberal arts college in Prince Edward County, Virginia.
Hampden–Sydney College is a liberal arts institution in Prince Edward County, Virginia. Red brick buildings stand along tree-lined avenues, and pathways connect classrooms, a library, and dormitories with sports facilities.
The institution was founded in 1775 and received its charter from the Virginia legislature in 1783. It ranks among the oldest institutions of its kind in the United States and operated during the Revolutionary period.
The campus was named after two 18th-century British politicians who advocated republican values. Students take a rhetoric course that has been mandatory since 1830, teaching clear speaking and persuasive writing.
The grounds stretch across a wooded, hilly landscape with fishing ponds and walking trails. Visitors can explore the main buildings on foot and enter the central lawn area where students often spend time outdoors.
The institution founded a seminary in 1812 and a medical school in 1838 that later became part of a major university in Richmond. Both institutions grew from the effort to expand education in different fields.
