Village of Monroe Historic District
Village of Monroe Historic District, Historic district in Monroe, US.
The Village of Monroe Historic District contains around 36 properties - homes, churches, and shops spread across the area with many along old roads. The district also includes a mill pond, open spaces, and a cemetery that give the place its character today.
The settlement was founded in 1741 when David Smith built the first house and created a mill by damming Ramapo Creek. This early start with the mill became the foundation for how the place grew over the following decades.
The buildings here show different architectural styles that developed over the 1800s, moving from Federal designs toward Greek Revival forms. Walking through, you can see how the structures reflect the taste and needs of each generation that lived here.
The district is easy to explore on foot since the buildings are arranged along established roads. It is best to wear comfortable shoes and allow time to walk through the various structures at a relaxed pace.
The district is home to one of New York State's oldest Masonic Lodges, a quiet reminder of the communities that shaped this place. The remains of a horse racetrack that operated until 1927 also hint at an entertainment culture that has long since disappeared.
