Village of Monroe Historic District

The Village of Monroe Historic District extends across 81 acres, containing 36 properties including residential buildings, churches, and commercial structures along Stage Road.

The district originates from the 1741 settlement by David Smith, who constructed the first house and established a mill by damming Ramapo Creek.

The architecture within the district demonstrates the progression of building styles, from Federal designs to Greek Revival structures of the nineteenth century.

The district boundaries follow New York State Route 17M on the west side and incorporate the mill pond, park, and Monroe Cemetery to the south.

The district includes New York State's oldest Masonic Lodge and contains substantial open spaces, including a former racetrack that operated until 1927.
