Long Island University, Private university in Brooklyn, United States
Long Island University is a private campus in Downtown Brooklyn that spreads across several buildings near the intersection of Flatbush and DeKalb Avenues. The grounds include nine academic structures with lecture halls, laboratories, libraries, and athletic facilities for student activities.
New York State education authorities founded the institution in 1926 with the aim of making higher education available to young people from different economic backgrounds. The Arnold & Marie Schwartz pharmacy school, which has operated since 1891, later joined the campus as part of its offerings.
The Kumble Theater inside the campus hosts student shows, visiting artists, and neighborhood groups throughout the semester. Theater and sports spaces welcome local residents for community gatherings when classes are not in session.
The campus is accessible through several entrances along Flatbush Avenue and DeKalb Avenue, with most buildings connected by covered walkways. Visitors exploring the grounds can use the open pathways between academic structures during good weather.
The Brooklyn location is one of several campuses operated by the institution across New York and Long Island. The pharmacy program ranks among the oldest of its kind in the region, with roots going back to the late 19th century.
