Minnesota Zoo, Nonprofit zoo in Apple Valley, United States
Minnesota Zoo is a nonprofit animal park in Apple Valley, south of Minneapolis, covering roughly 485 acres (196 hectares). The facility houses more than 4,500 animals from over 500 species in enclosures designed to resemble natural environments.
The park opened on May 22, 1978, and was among the first state-run zoos in the United States. Since then, the facility has grown into an important center for species conservation programs.
The name comes from the state where it is located and reflects its role as a regional attraction for the Twin Cities area. Visitors can observe animals grouped by geographic regions, with exhibits designed to mirror the natural habitats of each species.
The facility typically opens at 10 in the morning and closes at 4 in the afternoon, with tickets available for purchase online in advance. The grounds cover a large area, so visitors should wear comfortable shoes and plan enough time to walk around.
Discovery Bay displays marine life in a large facility that includes a dolphinarium with seating for 800 spectators. The Russia's Grizzly Coast section presents animal species from the Russian Far East, including Amur tigers and brown bears.
