Redwood Falls, city in the U.S. state of Minnesota

Redwood Falls is a small city in Minnesota nestled along the Redwood River, with a quiet and walkable downtown. Historic buildings line the streets alongside local shops, and nearby parks offer trails and natural areas for outdoor activities.

The city was founded in 1864 by Colonel Sam McPhail, shortly after the U.S.-Dakota War displaced the Dakota people from the region. The arrival of railroads in the late 1870s and 1880s brought growth, and notably, Richard Sears worked here as a railway agent before later founding the Sears mail order company.

The name comes from the waterfalls of the Redwood River, which have shaped the town's identity since its founding. You can see how the community keeps traditions alive through local churches, seasonal festivals, and the way neighbors support each other and local businesses.

The city is easy to explore on foot and offers straightforward lodging options like motels and campgrounds. Alexander Ramsey Park with hiking trails and the Redwood Falls Aquatic Center are good starting points for outdoor activities.

Richard Sears, the founder of the famous Sears mail order company, started his career as a railway agent in this small town. Additionally, A.C. Burmeister, a businessman originally from Germany, installed the town's first electric light system in 1898 and created Lake Redwood by damming the river.
