Huntersville sits 14 miles (23 kilometers) north of Charlotte and covers 41 square miles (106 square kilometers) of land at an elevation of 827 feet (252 meters) above sea level. The suburb belongs to Mecklenburg County and forms a residential area with parks, shopping centers and business districts along Interstate 77.
Originally named Craighead, the settlement was incorporated in 1873 and renamed after Robert Boston Hunter, a local cotton farmer and landowner. The population grew rapidly during the late 20th century as people moved in from Charlotte and surrounding areas.
The Carolina Renaissance Festival takes place on October and November weekends, bringing medieval entertainment, craftspeople and period performances to the area. Visitors see jousting matches, traditional crafts and costumes from a bygone era.
Interstate 77 connects the town with Charlotte and express bus routes allow commuters to travel daily into the metropolitan area. Most shops and parks line the main roads, so a car makes access easier.
Joe Gibbs Racing is based here and has achieved over 190 Cup race victories along with multiple NASCAR championships throughout its history. The shop sits near the main road and allows visitors a glimpse into the motorsport world.
