To the Struggle Against World Terrorism, Memorial sculpture in Bayonne, United States.
To the Struggle Against World Terrorism is a bronze and nickel memorial in Bayonne, New Jersey, rising from the former military port. The nearly 100-foot sculpture holds a 40-foot nickel-clad teardrop suspended through a jagged opening in the center of the structure.
The sculpture was dedicated on September 11, 2006, by former President Bill Clinton and commemorates victims of the 1993 and 2001 World Trade Center attacks. The work initially struggled to find a site in New York before Bayonne accepted the installation.
Russian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli designed this work as a gesture of solidarity between his country and America following the attacks. Visitors can view the sculpture from the waterfront, where an open sight line extends toward the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan.
The memorial stands at the former Military Ocean Terminal and is accessible year-round from the waterfront. Granite plates around the sculpture bear the names of those who died in the attacks.
The construction rests on eight supporting stilts embedded 45 meters underground and is held in position near the waterfront by thousands of bolts. The angled tear in the center reflects light differently throughout the day and constantly changes the appearance of the teardrop.
