Bayonne, Industrial port city in Hudson County, United States
Bayonne is a city on the western shore of Upper New York Bay in the state of New Jersey. The urban area sits on a peninsula between Newark Bay to the west and New York Bay to the east, stretching several miles from north to south.
The settlement began in 1646 under Dutch rule as Bergen Neck and later received the name Konstable Hoeck. In 1869, the official incorporation as a city with its current name took place.
The eastern waterfront promenade still shows the layout of smaller docks and loading areas from the heavy industry era. Today, residents use these sections for walks along the water and fishing.
Light rail stations run along the eastern side and connect the city to larger regional transit hubs. For those familiar with the area, many destinations within the narrow peninsula can be reached on foot.
The northern end of the peninsula serves as the arrival point for several long-distance pipeline systems from the southern United States. Among others, the Big Inch pipeline terminates here after traveling nearly 1,500 miles (about 2,400 kilometers) from Texas.
