Richmond County Courthouse
Richmond County Courthouse, County courthouse in St. George, Staten Island, United States
Richmond County Courthouse is a county courthouse in St. George on Staten Island featuring six Corinthian columns supporting a classical temple front with a pediment. The building sits elevated on a sloping hill overlooking the harbor and is accessed by a grand staircase.
Construction started in 1913 but was delayed by World War I, with the courthouse opening in 1919 to serve Staten Island residents. Designed by the architecture firm Carrere & Hastings, the building was intended to be a prominent symbol of justice in the region.
The building displays classical features that emphasize its function as a seat of justice, and the formal gardens reinforce the authority and dignity associated with the law. Visitors can look out toward the harbor from the grounds, reflecting the site's importance in the island's story.
The building is located at Richmond Terrace with street parking available nearby and public transportation access making it easy to reach. Visitors should know this is an active courthouse, so access to certain areas may be limited depending on judicial activity.
The L-shaped structure was deliberately designed to adapt to the uneven terrain and make use of natural grade changes on the sloping site. A law library operated within its walls from 1920 until 2000, serving attorneys and legal professionals who worked in the building.
