New York Wheel, Observation wheel in Staten Island, US
The New York Wheel is an unfinished observation wheel in Staten Island, New York, United States, located in the St. George neighborhood near the waterfront. The structure remains incomplete, with partial construction visible next to the Empire Outlets retail complex.
The project began in 2012 as a plan to draw tourists to Staten Island, but financial troubles and repeated delays halted construction by 2018. The site has remained dormant since then, with its future uncertain.
The structure includes 36 glass-enclosed capsules designed to accommodate 40 passengers each for panoramic views of Manhattan and New York Harbor.
The site sits near the Staten Island Ferry terminal and is reachable by public transport. The nearby parking garage, built for the project, offers space for vehicles even though the wheel itself is not operational.
The unfinished structure is visible from a distance and draws curious visitors who wonder why the project was never completed. Some see the site as a symbol of ambitious development plans that fell short in this part of the city.
