Staten Island Borough Hall
Staten Island Borough Hall, Town hall in St. George, Staten Island, United States
Staten Island Borough Hall is a three-story limestone structure with a mansard roof and central clock tower visible from the harbor. Inside, a second-floor courtroom features carved wood paneling and period furniture.
Built between 1904 and 1906, this hall marked the relocation of Staten Island's government center from Richmondtown to St. George following the 1898 consolidation. This move reflected the growing importance of the new waterfront district.
The grand marble lobby displays WPA reliefs and murals by Frederick Charles Stahr from 1940, showing important moments in Staten Island's development. These artworks tell the community's story through their scenes.
The building sits along Richmond Terrace in St. George and is easily reached from the ferry terminal. Keep in mind that this is an active government building, so not all areas are freely accessible to visitors.
This building was originally planned as part of a larger series of public buildings with gardens designed by George Cromwell, but only this structure and the adjacent Richmond County Courthouse were completed. The unrealized plans reveal the ambitious vision for the new government district.
