Middlesboro, Mining town in Bell County, Kentucky, United States.

Middlesboro is a city situated in a bowl-shaped valley in Kentucky, nestled within the Cumberland Mountains near the borders of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. The surrounding hills and mountain ridges form the natural boundaries that define this enclosed settlement.

British investors founded the city in 1890 and named it after Middlesbrough in Yorkshire, England, intending to develop it as an iron and steel center. Mining became the main economic driver and shaped the town's identity throughout the 20th century.

During the 1950s, the city earned recognition as Athens of the Mountains because an opera house and schools created spaces for artists and students. This support for the arts left a lasting mark on how locals view their community.

The town is best explored on foot through the downtown area, where you can observe the layout of streets and older buildings at your own pace. Weather in the valley can change quickly, so it's wise to dress in layers when walking around.

The city is home to one of the oldest continuously operating golf courses in the United States, offering visitors a glimpse into the area's longest sporting tradition. Additionally, the town sits within a geological depression that scientists have identified as the remains of an ancient meteor impact.
