Middlesboro, Mining town in Bell County, Kentucky, United States.

Middlesboro sits within a bowl-shaped valley at 352 meters elevation, surrounded by the Cumberland Mountains near the borders of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia.

British investors established the city in 1890, naming it after Middlesbrough in Yorkshire, England, with plans to develop it as an iron and steel center.

The city earned recognition as Athens of the Mountains during the 1950s due to its opera house, educational institutions, and support for arts programs.

City Hall at 221 North 21st Street operates from 8 AM to 4 PM, providing municipal services with a lunch closure between noon and 1 PM.

Middlesboro contains the oldest continuously operating golf course in the United States and sits within what scientists identify as an ancient meteor crater.
