Lindenhurst, Residential village in Suffolk County, United States
Lindenhurst is a village on Long Island's southern shore in Suffolk County, encompassing neighborhoods and shops spread across its residential area. The community sits along Montauk Highway, where most commercial activity takes place.
Originally settled by German immigrants from Silesia and called Breslau, the community was renamed in 1891 and formally incorporated as a village in 1923. These changes reflected the area's growth and shifting identity over several decades.
The Lindenhurst Union Free School District maintains multiple educational facilities, including a high school and middle school serving the local population.
The community connects to nearby areas through the Long Island Rail Road on the Babylon Branch and Suffolk County Transit buses that run regularly. Getting around is straightforward whether you use public transportation or a car to explore different parts of the village.
During Hurricane Sandy in 2012, more than half of the village's streets flooded with several feet of water, forcing major evacuation and recovery operations. This disaster reshaped how the community approaches storm preparedness and flood protection.
