Texas Highland Lakes

Texas Highland Lakes, Chain of lakes in Texas Hill Country, United States.

The Texas Highland Lakes system consists of six interconnected lakes that stretch through the Hill Country of central Texas along the Colorado River. Each lake is created and controlled by dams that form part of a managed water system.

The Lower Colorado River Authority built these lakes between 1930 and 1940 to control flooding and provide hydroelectric power to central Texas communities. These construction projects transformed the landscape and shaped the region's development for decades.

The lakes serve as gathering places where locals and visitors enjoy water skiing, fishing, and boating throughout the year as part of their outdoor lifestyle. Towns around the water have developed around these recreation areas as community hubs.

The lakes offer multiple public access points for boats and water activities at different locations throughout the system. Some lakes maintain consistent water levels that allow year-round use, while others fluctuate with seasons.

Lake Buchanan, the largest in the chain, has an unusually long and complex shoreline with numerous inlets and peninsulas that create hidden coves and sheltered spots. This intricate shape makes it popular for exploring different sections throughout a day.
