The assassination of William McKinley occurred during a public reception at the Temple of Music in Buffalo, New York.
On September 6, 1901, President McKinley was shot by anarchist Leon Czolgosz and died eight days later from gangrene caused by the wounds.
The event shook the nation and marked the third time in American history that a sitting president was assassinated.
The location of the assassination has since been replaced by a different structure, as the Temple of Music was demolished in 1954.
McKinley's assassination led to the Secret Service permanently taking on the role of presidential bodyguards.
