Bare Mountain

Bare Mountain, Mountain summit in Massachusetts, United States.

Bare Mountain is a summit within the Holyoke Range in Massachusetts formed from igneous rock, rising to approximately 1,000 feet. Several marked trails wind up through the forest to the open peak, which provides views across the Connecticut River Valley toward Mount Norwottuck and surrounding ridges.

For many years the peak was believed to be lower than its neighbor Mount Hitchcock, but recent surveying revealed it actually stands slightly taller. This finding changed understandings of the relative heights within the Holyoke Range.

The summit draws hikers and nature enthusiasts who gather to enjoy views across the valley and surrounding woodlands from the open peak. Local visitors often use the trails as a place to connect with the regional landscape and observe seasonal changes in the forest.

The mountain can be accessed via multiple marked trails with varying difficulty levels, each beginning from designated parking areas with information signage. Sturdy footwear is recommended because the terrain includes steep sections and can be uneven or muddy depending on recent weather.

Beneath the mountain's north face sits a remarkable underground vault originally built as a U.S. Air Force Strategic Air Command bunker during the Cold War. Today this hidden structure serves as a library storage facility shared by several colleges in the region.
