Augustana College, Liberal arts college in Rock Island, US
Augustana College is a liberal arts institution in Rock Island, Illinois, spread across a large campus along the Mississippi River. The buildings combine old brick architecture with newer teaching and research facilities, surrounded by green spaces and tall trees.
The college was founded in 1860 by Swedish and Norwegian Lutherans and moved several times before finding its current location on the Mississippi riverbank in 1875. Over the decades, the campus grew with new faculties and residential buildings, while maintaining its connection to the Lutheran church.
The campus carries a name with church roots and still belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church today, which shows in the open atmosphere and the way students interact. Many of the paths and courtyards carry Swedish or Norwegian names, a reminder of the Scandinavian founding history.
The campus is easy to walk around, with paved paths that remain usable in all weather, and several visitor parking areas. Those using public transport can reach the campus through the Quad Cities bus network, which serves several nearby stops.
The geological museum on campus preserves complete skeletons of marine reptiles and dinosaurs, including finds from Antarctica. The collection also includes rocks and minerals open to students and visitors alike.
