Bellerose, village in Nassau County, New York, United States of America
Bellerose is a small village in Nassau County on Long Island that developed from former flower fields. The streets are quiet, lined mainly with homes that have neat yards, and the village maintains its intimate neighborhood character.
The village was founded around 1910 by Helen Marsh, who purchased flower fields and began building homes. In 1924, Bellerose officially became a village after Marsh convinced the railroad to establish a station bearing its name.
The name Bellerose may come from a daughter of the Rose family or from the flower fields that once covered the land. Residents take pride in their small village and its heritage, which shows in the well-kept homes and strong sense of community.
The village has a city hall reachable Monday through Thursday afternoons and Friday mornings. Residents can text for parking permits or report trash collection issues, and metered parking is available in shopping and train station areas.
The village is so small you can walk across it in minutes while passing several historic buildings that hold nearly a century of history. The name may come from Helen's daughter Belle or the gladiola fields, offering two stories about the same origin.
