Steel Hawg, Steel roller coaster at Indiana Beach in Monticello, United States.
Steel Hawg is a steel roller coaster at Indiana Beach amusement park in Monticello. The ride features a 111-degree vertical drop, two complete inversions, several twists, and reaches speeds of around 41 miles per hour (66 km/h).
The coaster opened in July 2008 as a creation of S&S Worldwide. It held the record for steepest roller coaster in North America until another even steeper one opened elsewhere in 2015.
The Travel Channel recognized Steel Hawg's engineering excellence by ranking it number 22 on their list of 101 Greatest Thrills in America.
Riders need to meet a minimum height of around 4 feet (1.2 meters) to ride this coaster. The cars are equipped with lap bars and shoulder restraints to keep passengers secure throughout the ride.
This coaster is the first El Loco model made by S&S Worldwide and features an outward-banked turn combined with a downward-facing roll. These design elements create a ride with unusual mechanics that were not found on any other coaster at the time.
