AutoWorld, Indoor theme park and automobile museum in Flint, United States.
AutoWorld was an indoor amusement park and automobile museum in Flint, Michigan, housed across roughly 800,000 square feet (74,000 square meters). The complex combined rides with historical exhibits and divided into several themed areas with entertainment zones.
The complex opened on July 4, 1984, as part of a downtown renewal program and received 80 million dollars in funding. After just six months it closed for the first time in January 1985 and reopened only seasonally until its permanent shutdown in 1994.
The building displayed a recreated street scene from Flint's past with storefronts and shop windows from the city's heyday. The collection of advertising posters and signage from earlier decades let visitors step into the era when the car industry shaped the region.
The attraction sat in downtown Flint and was easy to reach by car. The indoor facility offered a visit option even in bad weather and suited families with children of different ages.
Inside the building a full Ferris wheel turned, letting visitors ride it even during rain or snow. The combination of fairground rides and educational exhibition was meant to appeal to a broad public and remains uncommon today.
