Belmont Park, Horse racing venue in Elmont, United States.
Belmont Park is a horse racing venue in Elmont, New York, about 15 miles (24 km) east of Manhattan. The facility features multiple tracks for different surfaces and holds tens of thousands of spectators during race days.
The racetrack opened in 1905 to replace an earlier facility and was completely rebuilt in 1963. In 2023, demolition of the old building began for another reconstruction intended to create the most modern horse racing facility in North America.
The track bears the name of August Belmont Jr., a late 19th-century banker and horse breeder. Local visitors often come with family and friends to bet together on races and spend the afternoon outdoors.
The racing season runs from late April to mid-July and from mid-September to late October. On race days, the facility opens several hours before the first start, giving visitors time to watch horses and look around.
The main track extends about 1.5 miles (2.4 km), making it one of the longest racetracks in North America. This length gives horses more room to run and makes the final phase of races less tight than on shorter tracks.
